Moving day will always be filled with a mixture of excitement and anxiety for everyone involved. Suddenly your whole life is up in the air and it’ll take a whole lot of work before you can finally settle in to your new digs and enjoy your space.

If you think moving day is stressful for you, just imagine how much worse it can be for your pets. All of a sudden they are moved to a new place with new smells, new things and maybe even new people, so how do you make moving day as stress-free as possible for your furry friends?

It’s all about preparation! Pets can sense change, so before your move, try and keep your pet’s schedule as regular as possible. This means meal times, walkies and playtimes stay as close to normal as possible, which will help to lessen the stress your dog or cat is under worrying about what will happen next. It might be difficult to fit this in to your hectic schedule at times, but it’ll be worth it when you have one less thing to worry about come moving day.

During the big move it’s important to spend as much time with your pet as possible, this means avoid leaving them in kennels or with people they don’t know. If having your pet around while you get your new place sorted is too difficult, try leaving them with a family member or friend that they are used to and visit them regularly.

Finally, the key to successfully integrating your family pet into your new family home, is to keep a few things about that are familiar to them. Be it a raggedy toy, their stinky old bed or even a piece of your own clothing, it definitely helps to ease them in to new surroundings when they have their favourite things nearby.

So when the big day finally comes, remember to take into account the fact that it’s as big a deal to your pet as it is to you, so go easy on them, keep an eye out for them and give them loads of attention once you get settled in!
